AMMAN -- Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Wednesday instructed relevant ministers to study the challenges facing the agricultural sector, particularly those related to promoting local agricultural products.

During a meeting with the president and members of the Jordanian Farmers Union (JFU), in addition to several representatives of the agricultural sector, the premier stressed the government's readiness to study the possibility of amending the current JFU Law.

Ensour highlighted the need to activate the Livestock Support Fund and increase the capital available to the Agricultural Credit Corporation.

He stressed the government's keenness to support the demands of productive sectors, highlighting challenges facing the economy.

During the meeting, attended by Minister of Agriculture Ahmad Al Khattab, Minister of Industry and Trade and Minister of Information and Communications Technology Hatem Halawani and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister of Water and Irrigation Mahir Abul Samin, JFU President Odeh Rawashdeh highlighted the need to open the door for the recruitment of Asian workers in the sector.

Agricultural sector representatives demanded easier access to Iraqi markets for local products and an increase in customs duties on imported goods to protect local products.
