Colza harvest started across 45,000 hectares of farmlands of Golestan province.
Announcing the above, a senior official of Golestan Agricultural Jihad Department, Esmaeil Esfandiaripour, said this Caspian province has the highest area under colza cultivation, IRIB reported.
Golestan province accounts for 40 percent of the country's colza farms that span over 115,000 hectares.
The provinces of Mazandaran and Fars rank second and third respectively in terms of colza production.
Esfandiaripour predicted that over 90,000 tons of colza oilseeds would be harvested from provincial farmlands in the current Iranian year (to end March 2014).
Golestani farmers planted colza across 25,000 hectares of their lands and harvested 40,000 tons of oilseeds last year.
Colza oilseeds produce 40-45 percent oil and 50-55 percent oil cake (pressed seed).
Rural cooperative network and four oil extraction units, which are active across the province, conduct the guaranteed and agreed purchase of colza.
The price for guaranteed purchase of colza stands at 10,000 rials and for agreed purchase stands at 17,000 rials.
Earlier, Director General of Iran Cotton and Oilseeds Organization Mohammad Reza Dargahi expressed hope that the country's oilseed output would reach 1.2 million tons by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2015), ISNA reported.
Dargahi said attaining self-sufficiency in oilseed production is a priority of Agricultural Jihad Ministry.
"Over 80 percent of the country's demand for oilseeds are secured from Malaysia, Brazil and India," he said.
He explained that Iran annually needs 1.27 million tons of edible oil and the country needs over 2.5 million tons of oil cake.
"The country can gain self-sufficiency within five years by making plans and increasing the area under oilseed cultivation," he said.
Dargahi pointed out that the country has proper infrastructures for growing oilseeds.
"Currently, colza can be cultivated across 30 provinces," he said.
