Sharjah: GEMS Modern Academy stamped their class in age-group cricket tournaments when their Under-13 boys and Under-17 girls won the Vision Cup titles in the Maxtalent Global Sports-organised events under the aegis of Sharjah Cricket Council.

In the boys’ final, GEMS beat Indian High School Dubai by 40 runs in the event which saw teams from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah fight to win this prestigious title.

Batting first, GEMS Modern Academy managed to put up a total of 134 in 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets. Tushar Tugnait, most prolific rungetter in this tournament with back-to-back centuries, got off to a flying start but was dismissed on 17 off 12 balls thanks to a stunning coach by Utkarsh Agrawal at point.

As wickets fell around him Varun Naynar of GEMS kept his cool as he knocked the good balls for singles and punished the bad ones to score 30 off 31 balls. Indian High School, who chased down targets with ease in the group stages against tough oppositions, failed to come together as a unit. Elred Rego, who stole the limelight in the previous match with a 16-ball half-century, scored 18 off 11 balls but impatience led to his dismissal.

Mazhar Khan, administrator of Emirates Cricket Board, gave away the winners’ trophy to GEMS Modern Academy. Summing up the tournament, Sudhakar Shetty, Managing Director of Maxtalent Global Sports, said: “An unbelievable rate of scoring was witnessed as we have seen a 32-ball hundred, a 16-ball half-century, three centuries in total along with many other jaw-dropping statistics.”
