Teachers at Fujairah Women's College (FWC) held a workshop for girls on how to study mathematics through an entertaining method at Um Ayman Secondary School.
Alyson Menzies, a teacher, said: "The workshop focused on learning experiences that can motivate young women to take an interest in mathematics at school."
The teachers highlighted the importance of maths in their daily lives and how it can widen career opportunities and enhance job prospects. Suhair Al Wahabi, another teacher, said: "Eight students enthusiastically took part in the fun activities held in English. They performed extremely well and enjoyed the session."
A follow-up session was also held with five maths teachers from the Um Ayman Secondary School. The session focused on the importance of understanding the needs of girls in learning maths.
"Discussions focused on practical ways teachers can make learning experiences interesting. For example, using real life examples in maths lessons can help," said Al Wahabi. The maths teachers said they would like to interact more with teachers from colleges and universities to gain further knowledge to use in their classrooms.
Meanwhile, Dr Bill Lex, Director of FWC, recently presented plaques of appreciation to several community partners in recognition of their contributions to the college.
Dr Lex honoured Mohammed Al Natafji from Fujairah National Group, Khaled Al Mazroui, General Manager of the Fujairah International Airport, and Sharief Habib Al Awadhi, Director General of the Fujairah Free Zone Authority, for their support to various events, projects and award programmes benefiting FWC students.
Dr Lex highlighted the generosity of these community partners in supporting students.
"The college is committed to providing students with skills to become productive employees and build the local economy," he said.
He pointed out that partnerships, such as the ones with these three community organisations, demonstrate to students and their families that local business supports the efforts and dedication of the students.
