DOHA: Fortis, Swiss watch makers which pioneered automatic watches, have launched their latest model equipped with state-of-the-art technology in time keeping at the Blue Salon pavilion at the 7th Doha Watches and Jewellery Exhibition.

Called VW spaceleader chronograph, the ultra-modern timepiece was produced in conjunction with the creative heads at Volkswagen Design.

"These Volkswagen watches are limited edition with only 2012 pieces available, in celebration of our 100th year in 2012," said Max Peter of Fortis watches."

Established in 1912, Fortis has a long and pioneering tradition, including being the first watch factory in the world to produce automatic wrist watches. Today, Fortis watches are worn by different civil and military aviation squadrons and since 1994 has been part of the official equipment for space missions and on board the International Space Station ISS.

"What makes Fortis watches unique and special is that they have been the official watch worn by cosmonauts on space missions and now has evolved into a favourite brand by many people around the world," Peter said.

The limited edition watch features design elements reflecting the influence of the future of automation, including its new style ergonomic bracelet, designed especially for the VW spaceleader chronograph and the aesthetic watch-face, formed with an anti-reflective and scratch resistant sapphire crystal to ensure excellent legibility and durability.

The VW spaceleader chronograph will be available at Fortis retail network around the world. The watch was named in the spirit of Fortis' continued collaboration with the space industry since the 1970's and was awarded the prestigious iF product design award this year in Hanover, Germany.

Peter said Fortis established its presence in Qatar several years ago and the launch of the new Volkswagen spaceleader chronograph in the country is their way of showing appreciation for one of their loyal market here and part of their commitment for development in the Middle East.

"Fortis has gained good response during last year's edition of the expo we are expecting it to be bigger and better this year," Peter said.
