FIVE Bahrainis were arrested for planning terrorist actions, an official from the National Security Agency said yesterday.

"National Security Agency forces have arrested a cell which was planning terrorist activities after receiving precise information on their movement which targeted national interests in the Kingdom and endangered the lives of innocent citizens," the official said.

He said that the forces seized weapons and ammunition in their possession which they were planning to use in terrorist operations targeting the nation's security and citizens.

The five Bahrainis are Mohieddeen Mohammed Mohieddeen Khan, born in Lebanon on July 26, 1961; Bassam Abdulrazzaq Abdullah Bu Khuwa, born in Manama on April 19, 1970; Bassam Yousef Abdulkarim Ali, born in Muharraq in 1965; Isa Abdullah Abdulrahman Al Belushi, born in Khubar on December 25, 1972; and Jamal Hilal Mohammed Al Belushi; born on February 14, 1965.

"Investigations have started with this terrorist group to find out if they belong to certain political organisations or if they were working alone," the official said, adding that the group would be handed to the criminal court once the investigation was completed.

The spokesman said that the National Security Agency would communicate with great transparency the results of the investigations to the public through the Press and the media.

Public Prosecutor Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Jaber Al Khalifa said that the prosecution would deal with the case fairly, stressing that people are innocent until proven guilty. Shaikh Jaber said that if the investigation proved that the arrested belonged to Al Qaeda, they would not be handed over to the US or transferred to Guantanamo, stressing that the laws and Constitution of Bahrain did not allow it.

Commenting about the arrests, University of Bahrain head of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Shaikh Abdullateef Al Mahmood said that Muslims should be careful not to give opportunities to people who are seeking to discredit Muslims and Arab and Islamic states.

"Islamic commands believers to respect people and their property, and to show such reverence to all the people in an Islamic country," Dr Al Mahmood said.
