Dubai: With exams on the horizon, many school and university students are hitting the books in preparation for their final exams.

Gulf News talked to Sarah Al Shammari, an instructor at the Achievement Academy at the American University of Sharjah, about what students can do to better prepare for their exams and how to deal with stress.

Depending on the subject and each individual’s learning style, she explained that it was important for each student to figure out the study method that suits them best.

“It is important that each student finds out what their learning style is — whether they learn best through hearing, reading or doing,” she said.

While each student seeks different study techniques to help them focus, Sarah said that using flashcards can help people who learn best through ‘doing’. “Flashcards help activate a person who learns through doing because they are actively shuffling through the cards when studying,” she said.

“Highlighting sentences in different colours can work best for people who learn through ‘reading’ because they try and remember what the page looks like when studying,” she added.

She also explained that using a tape recorder, studying in groups or revising with friends is a method that works well for people who learn through ‘hearing’.

Another main factor to consider when preparing for exams is the study environment, said Sarah, who highlighted that it has a strong impact on a student’s concentration level.

“Finding a place that suits you is very important so that if you need a very quiet area to focus, studying at home alone would work,” she said, adding that some students need background noise, such as music, in order to focus and should study in a more busy space.
