FedEx Express is recommencing intercontinental flight operations and will prioritise shipments on a "first in-first out" basis.
According to a report, one flight has left Paris for their Memphis hub and seven flights have travelled from the US to France. FedEx said that additional freight movements from their Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions were also being flown into Charles de Gaulle, Paris.
In a statement, Fedex said: "Following the opening of a number of European airports on Monday, April 19, FedEx Express is pleased to begin to recommence intercontinental flight operations. We are positioning our air operations to be able to resume our full flight schedule as soon as possible. Until this time, inbound and outbound shipments from and to the affected areas may still experience service delays."
However, FedEx has said it cannot confirm that services will not be disrupted in the near future. "Due to the fluid nature of the movement of the volcanic ash, FedEx is still monitoring this situation very carefully and will continue to take advantage of any opportunity to fly into additional airports as they open. However, we caution that it will take time to clear backlogs of cargo and customers should expect delays in shipments."
"We are committed to pro viding customers with the highest possible service levels and under these circumstances, we will prioritise shipments on a "first in-first out" basis. If customers are shipping perishable, temperature control or dry ice shipments to intercontinental destinations, we recommend to hold these until we are able to resume our normal flight schedule," it said.
For shipments within Europe, the cargo service is utilising its European trucking network.
