January 2003
ExxonMobil and Qatar are working jointly to bring gas resources to local, regional and world markets. The company has interests in two projects associated with Qatar’s North field, the world’s biggest source of non-associated natural gas (gas in a reservoir that contains no oil).
Total field recoverable gas reserves are in excess of 900 trillion cubic feet. Both the Qatargas and RasGas projects produce from the North Field.
The gas is liquefied at onshore facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City, a port area 80 km north of the capital city of Doha.
The liquefied natural gas is stored in insulated tanks until it is pumped into special tankers for delivery to world markets.
ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum are also developing gas from the North Field for pipeline sales inside the country and for exports within the Arabian Gulf region. Main offices are located in the capital city of Doha and there are approximately 141 ExxonMobil employees in Qatar.
Upstream Activities
ExxonMobil has a 26.5 per cent stake in the Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd, known as RasGas, which began LNG deliveries in 1999. It operates two trains, or parallel arrangements of facilities, to convert the gas to liquid. With a total annual capacity of 6.6 million tons of LNG, RasGas supplies about 4.8 million tons a year (MMTA) to Korea under a 25-year contract. The project is currently under expansion to supply 7.5 MMTA of LNG to Petronet of India and 3.5 MMTA of LNG to Edison of Italy.
The Qatargas project in which ExxonMobil holds a 10 per cent interest has been in production since 1996. It operates three trains with annual capacity of 7.2 MMTA. Qatargas supplies customers in Japan with up to 6 MMTA of LNG annually under 25-year contract, and 9.1 million tones of LNG to Spain between 2001 – 2009. A debottlenecking project is moving ahead to increase capacity to 9.2 MMTA by the year 2006.
The Al Khaleej Gas project, previously known as Enhanced Gas Utilisation – EGU, project will produce at least 1.75 billion cubic feet of gas a day to fuel power, petrochemical and other industrial ventures at Ras Laffan City, as well as elsewhere in Qatar and throughout the region.
The project will also produce condensate, propane and butane for export, while ethane will be available as domestic petrochemical feedstock.
In January 2002, EM, Qatar Petroleum and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation signed a term sheet for the supply of gas via pipeline from Qatar to Kuwait.
ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum signed in June 2001 a Letter of Intent (LOI) to conduct a technical feasibility study for a world-scale Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) plant in Qatar. The study was completed on schedule, and has provided Qatar Petroleum with details of EM's proprietary AGC-21 technology that can contribute to the optimum utilisation of resources from the North Field.
The proposed GTL plant will convert natural gas into high quality liquids products such as low sulfur diesel fuel, naphtha and lubricant basestocks for export to world markets.
Safety, Health and Environment
ExxonMobil is committed to continuous efforts to improve safety and environmental performance throughout its operations.
The Qatargas project is certified to ISO 9001 & 14001, the voluntary international standard for quality and environmental management systems.
The RasGas project is also certified to ISO 9001 and achieved a safety record of 52 million man-hours worked with only two lost time injuries during its construction.
ExxonMobil and Qatar jointly developed the country's State Environmental Standards, which are based primarily on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Bank Standards.
Community Activities
ExxonMobil has a long tradition of involvement in the communities in which it operates. In Qatar, this includes supporting a wide variety of programs such as the following:
