The popularity of a major form of alternative medicine is set to grow in the UAE, conference organisers said.

Increasing numbers of Gulf patients will ask to be treated using homeopathy as the discipline’s reputation improves, specialists said.

Their comments come as the two-day Dubai International Homeopathic Conference 2005 opens today at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dubai.

Homeopathy — the treatment of disease with tiny doses of a drug that in large quantities would produce symptoms of the illness — has been recognised by the UAE Ministry of Health since 2001.

Dr Esmail Sait, secretary general of the conference, said he wanted to improve the public’s understanding of homeopathy.

“We want to make it more popular. The Ministry of Health is supporting homeopathy productively and this conference will increase approval for it,” he said.

More than 300 delegates from overseas are due to attend the conference along with several dozen local specialists.

The conference is being organised by the New Fatima Medical Centre, which was created in 1997 and contains a homeopathic clinic.

Practitioners will share information on homeopathic treatments used internationally and find out how the latest technology is being used to benefit patients. The importance of proper research into homeopathy will also be discussed.

Among those supporting the event are the Zayed Complex for Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine in Abu Dhabi and the European Council for Classical Homeopathy.

The Indian Institute of Homeopathic Physicians and the Asian Homeopathic Medical League are also involved.

Speakers from the United Kingdom, Germany, India and Australia will deliver presentations. Topics to be covered include the use of homeopathy to treat cancer, homeopathy in dentistry and curing skin conditions.
