Dubai: Etisalat on Saturday announced a significant increase in the internet bandwidth it offers in the UAE with an additional link.

The increased capacity of 7.5 Gbps (Gigabits per second) is the highest bandwidth offered by any provider in the region.

The expansion in capacity has been done with an aim to accommodate the growth in internet usage in the UAE, the company said.

According to Abdullah Hashim, Assistant General Manager of eCompany, Etisalat's internet arm, "The demand for increased bandwidth is being driven by our customers who have started to embrace the broadband culture. Etisalat's focus on home broadband users with Al Shamil and SME businesses through the BusinessOne broadband service has created alternatives for UAE consumers to choose an appropriate service.

"The expansion will also cater to customers of EMIX (Emirates Internet Exchange) which is the region's leading internet hub.."

Ali Amiri, Etisalat's executive VP for Carrier and Wholesale, said, "By the end of 2006, Etisalat is planning to increase its working capacity even further to 10 Gbps."

The move takes the total number of links to 49.

Company in race for Egypt licence

Egypt's telecom regulator said yesterday nine of 11 bids for the country's third mobile phone licence had passed a technical evaluation and would go on to make financial bids and take part in a July 4 auction.

A consortium of Etisalat, Egyptian Post Office, National Bank of Egypt and Commercial International Bank is among the winners.

The auction starts at a minimum of 2.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($434 million) for the value of the licence in addition to three per cent of total revenues.
