Mohammad Saleh Badri, Acting General Director of ESMA, said, "This workshop complements our extensive efforts to adopt a national system of measurement units to enhance the U.A.E. economy and we also aim to help both merchants and consumers, so in this regard we have given merchants a-one-year grace period to convert from yards to meters and I think this period is enough for them."Mr. AlMulla emphasised that textile merchants who do not implement the metric system of measurement will face legal action from next year, depending on the offense. ESMA will coordinate with local and federal agencies for the prohibition of using illegal units of measurement on various products, not only textiles," added AlMulla\Mr. Khurana said that the workshop was an interactive environment where ESMA and merchants, mainly wholesalers, could discuss all the issues of the new regulations. "This implementation needs a lot of work to convince the merchants; especially the retailers, to convert to the new system and we are cooperating with ESMA to facilitate this mission," said Khurana.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2014.
