Motorists are being rewarded for good driving and courtesy on the roads.
The RoadStar campaign has despatched teams of experts to tour the city on the lookout for good drivers in a bid to promote road safety and encourage better driving.
The team is made up of officials from Dubai Police, Caltex, Emirates Motor Sports Federation, the press and Free FM 96.7, who will be giving away Dh60,000 during the campaign.
Sabu Sebastian, an Indian working as a heavy equipment technician, was one such winner. Sebastian, who has been driving in the UAE for four years, was awarded Dh750 and a certificate.
Alycia Morris, an Irishwoman who has lived the UAE for the past 27 years, was a second time winner. Morris, who has been driving for 25 years without any accidents, won a prize in a similar campaign a few years ago.
The campaign, which started a week ago, is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates Motor Sports Federation, and is sponsored by Gulf News, Lexus-Al Futtaim Motors and Automotive Brand Protection Coalition, an anti-bootlegging lobby group. Burger King is also giving free meal vouchers to winners.
Roshanara Sait, of the Emirates Motor Sports Federation, said: "The UAE has one of the highest road fatality rates in the world and our campaign is an attempt to cut down on these horrific numbers.
"What we are doing is making a positive reinforcement of the law. Instead of just using media to promote the campaign, we have applied a different approach, which is by word of mouth. This has proved to be very successful. The whole city seems to be talking about this unique campaign."
