KOCHI: The UAE-based EMKE Group is building India's biggest shopping mall in the port city of Kochi. Kerala's Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan launched the much-awaited project at a glittering function attended by UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Qassimi on Tuesday.

Achuthanandan unveiled the logo of the Lulu Shopping Mall by handing it over to T.K.A. Nair, principal secretary to the prime minister of India. Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan launched the website of the mall while the federal Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas released the brochure. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy presided over the function, which was also attended by Fisheries Minister S. Sharma, UAE Ambassador Mohammed Sultan Al-Owais and a host of politicans and dignitaries from India and abroad.

"Spread over 17 acres of prime land strategically located at the interjection of NH17, NH47 and Cochin Bypass at Edappally, this is going to be the biggest shopping Mall of the country," said Managing Director Yusuffali MA. Being built at an estimated cost of Rs15 billion, Lulu Shopping Mall has a built-up area of more than 2.5 million sq. ft. in 4 floors. Slated to open by mid-2011 it will house some of the best brands in fashion, cosmetics, home furnishing and jewelry.

Leasing of the space is in full swing with many top brands already signed up. Other attractions include a family amusement center, a massive food court with a capacity of 3,500 people, and a 9-screen multiplex to top it all.

The architecturally excellent mall designed by UK based consultants, will have a parking capacity for 3,000 cars with easy access from all main roads. It will also have special area to promote Kerala products and handicrafts.

The project also includes a 315-room luxury hotel by world's leading Marriott, with all top class facilities such as a spa, a gym, a swimming pool and banquet halls.

On completion, the project is expected to employ 8,000 people and create 20,000 indirect job opportunities.
