US independent Apache and UK-listed partner Regal Petroleum have made an oil discovery with their ERB-A-1X well in Egypt's East Ras Budran block onshore the Gulf of Suez, writes Nassir Shirkhani.
The well was the first of two probes and was spudded on 15 June. It was drilled to a total depth of 13,615 feet to a primary target in the Darat limestone.
Regal said that during a 12-hour flow period, the well produced 1910 barrels per day of oil through a 64/64-inch choke.
No water was produced and initial indications are that the oil has a gravity of about 17 degrees API.
The well has been suspended as a future producer.
The drilling rig will now be moved to the second planned exploration well, ERB-B-1X, which is anticipated to be completed in the fourth quarter.
The partners plan to drill an appraisal following the completion of the ERB-B-1X well.
Apache is preparing to inform the Egyptian authorities of the discovery's commerciality.
