Dubai: Emaratech, the company behind the smart gate passport screening systems at Dubai airport, wants to double the number of registered users to 700,000 by the end of year, according to a spokesperson.
The smart gate systems, which can process three passengers a minute, are set to become increasingly important as passenger numbers through Dubai International continue to rise.
Dubai International recorded 66.4 million passengers travelling through the airport in 2013, a 15.2 per cent increase on the previous. Numbers have continued to increase this year with more passengers travelling through Dubai International in the first quarter than London Heathrow, which was the busiest for international passenger traffic last year.
Streamline
The spokesperson, speaking to reporters at the Airport Show, said that more than 20 external registering centres have been opened across Dubai, including at the Airport show this week, to help streamline passenger passport checks.
Registration is open to UAE citizens and residents, GCC citizens and residents of 43 countries that are eligible for visa on arrival.
The spokesperson said the system will be eventually also be rolled out across Terminal 1 and 2 at Dubai International and at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC).
