MUSCAT -- Royal Ocean Racing Club will be professionally assisting the organisers of the 15th Dubai-Muscat Offshore Sailing Race, which will be flagged off in Dubai on January 18 and climax in Muscat on January 23.
In a press conference yesterday, the organisers revealed the details of this year's race. Mohammed Al Amri, a Sports Activities official at the Ministry of Sports Affairs, Major Ali Al Hinai of Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), race committee member David Clark were the persons who interacted with the media yesterday.
Clark said: "This year's race is scheduled to start at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club in Dubai on January 18. The race will start at 11am depending on the wind conditions. The first yacht is scheduled to arrive in Muscat on January 21 and the last before January 23."
The prize-distribution ceremony will take place at 12 noon on January 23 at the Marina Bander Al Rowdha with Said bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, as the chief guest.
This year the organisers have so far received 14 entries, including RNO's two yachts and a new team from Qatar. RNO's Major Ali Al Hinai said the crew of both Omani boats have been working hard for the race. Al Bashiq is skippered by Saleh Said Al Jabri and Al Uqab is led by Abdulaziz Yahya.
"The UK-based Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) have been involved in running and taking part in the prestigious international races for the past 80 years. This year we are involving the RORC in our race.
Basically they will be assisting us in running this year's race. But most importantly, two of their representatives will be here to see and assess the way we run the event," said the officials. "We are trying to get RORC recognition and if we succeed in our endeavour there is a chance of Dubai-Muscat race to be included in the list of RORC races. If it happens it will further rise the profile of the race and then it will become a truly global event," informed David Clark.
The annual race is jointly organised by the Ministry of Sports Affairs and Dubai Offshore Sailing Club in close cooperation with the Royal Navy of Oman, Marina Bander Al Rowdha, Royal Oman Police, UAE Marine Sports Federation and IRC Owners Association. Dubai-Muscat Race is a classical passage race of 360 nautical miles with boats sailing through famous Strait of Hormuz from relatively shallow waters of Arabian Gulf to deep waters of Indian Ocean.
