ABU DHABI, 24th August, 2014 (WAM) -- A new automated fare collection system, Hafilat, is to be launched by Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport to make bus travel easier in the emirate.

The DoT Abu Dhabi said it planned to install up to 70 ticket vending machines at all bus stations in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region, near air-conditioned bus shelters, and in shopping malls, to sell and top-up the cards with payment by cash or credit card.

Five "swift re-loaders", which allow commuters to re-charge their Hafilat cards, have been installed inside the Al Wahda bus terminal. The DoT will install up to 300 of the machines in all bus stations in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region, customer service centres, air-conditioned bus shelters, airports and hospitals. These machines only accept bank notes and do not provide change unlike the ticket vending machines, a report by The National daily said.

Once launched, cardholders can also visit ticket offices at bus stations in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, the Western region and in some customer service centres to purchase and personalise their cards with names and photos, renew them, pay fines for breaking public transport rules or report a lost card.
