The Ministry of Health has withdrawn a rule stipulating that pharmacies be situated at least 250 meters apart upon directives issued by acting Health Minister Adel Fakeih.
"The 250-meter distance rule has been withdrawn to accommodate more pharmacies in a row on a single street," said one official.
"The new arrangement was reached on request from existing pharmacy owners.
"The move will help local residents get everything they need on one street," the official added. The number of pharmacies almost doubled from 6,200 in 2011 to nearly 12,000 in 2013.
The regulations allowed each pharmacy owner to have 30 branches per city, located at least 250 meters apart.
