Doha: Vodafone Qatar announced yesterday that its World of Difference programme, the first for Qatar, has received over 300 applicants since it was opened for applications at the end of September. Vodafone is now calling for more applicants to the programme before it closes 31 December 2009.
The first initiative of its kind in Qatar, the World of Difference is a charitable programme sponsored by Vodafone Qatar, in which four individuals will be selected who wish to devote a year to work in service to society through a charity or other socially responsible organisation. Through the programme, Vodafone Qatar has pledged to pay each individual's salary for the entire year.
"The programme has clearly generated a great deal of interest," said Vodafone Qatar's HR Director Jan Mottram. "In the first week alone we had over 2,000 visits to our website."
To date 334 applications have been received, of which 61 percent have been received from male applicants and 39 percent from female. Thus far the overwhelming majority of applicants range between 18 and 29 years of age (50 percent), with applicants 30-39 years of age in second place at 32 percent. The programme is open to all people in Qatar. "It's not only about having an idea," commented Vodafone Qatar's Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Luisa Gentile, "it's about having the capacity to execute it and make it happen."
