Dubai: A record total prize fund of Dh60,000 and a car for the player of the tournament will be up for grabs in a new Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) Twenty20 tournament that begins this month.
The Superstars T20 tournament — due to start on April 24 and last a month — will feature 16 of the UAE’s leading teams. Some Dh35,000 of the prize money will go to the winning team, the runners-up will get Dh20,000 and the best bowler and batsman will each get Dh1,500.
The best overall player will also get an unprecedented prize of a Kia Picanto car, plus Dh2,000 cash. “We wanted to stage a tournament which will stand out among the rest. Though hundreds of tournaments are held in UAE for the last 40 years, never has a player been awarded a car for his performance,” Mohammad Lokhandwala, secretary of the DCC, told Gulf News.
“And for the first time in a tournament directly organised by the council, we will give away Dh35,000 as prize money for the winners and Dh20,000 for the runners-up.”
The draw for the tournament, which is organised jointly by the DCC and the Superstars T20 Committee and supported by Web Channel, was conducted at the India Club in the presence of captains and owners.
The Superstars T20 Committee members are Rahul Dalwale, Sharmin Patel, Shylesh Karayi and Abdul Azim Ansari, the Managing Director of Web Channel, who are the support sponsors and who are responsible for offering the prizes. Bilal Shaikh of Yas Sports will also distribute outfits for players and umpires and cricket gear for the man of the match award winners.
