MUSCAT: In an "emotional" initiative undertaken to raise funds for the Association of Early Intervention for Children with Special Needs, South African charity cyclist Tom Millward has covered 3,000 kilometers around Oman.

Tom reached Qurum City Centre on Thursday afternoon after his two-month-and-two-day epic tour of the Sultanate. "I am proud and privileged to have covered Oman by cycle to support local children with disabilities," he said after finishing his journey.

Tom praised the overwhelming response he received from the Omani people, all over the Sultanate during his trip. He was also amazed by the natural splendour of the Omani landscape, he mentioned.

"Omani people were very hospitable," Tom said, adding, "I did not face any difficulties in my adventure.

It was important for me to go on this journey in order to raise awareness about the challenges faced by local Omani children suffering from different disabilities."

The 46-year-old Tom is married with two children, and he is an enthusiastic mountain biker back home in his native South Africa and here in Oman.

For this journey, he carried with him a special trailer attached to his bike to carry a tent, clothes and other essential provisions.

Tom was keeping in touch with his wife Carolyn and his children on a daily basis with the technology and equipment that Omantel had provided.

Tom says he is very grateful for the extensive support that Omantel has provided - "both from a logistical and financial perspective".

The journey took Tom along the northern coast of Oman from Muscat to the southern part of Oman in Salalah.

Hasan Mohamed Moosa Al Moosa, marketing and fundraising manager at the Association of Early Intervention for Children with Disability, stressed that for such initiatives support from companies is important. "For Tom's adventure, many companies have contributed to support the initiative, including Omantel, Oasis, Muscat Pharmacy, Muscat Hospital, various hotel and other companies."
