MUSCAT -- Marketing is the key issue that craft industry is facing today although comprehensive measures are in place to address the same, according to the PACI (Public Authority for Crafts Industries).
The Authority has initiated various measures to encourage foreign markets to choose Omani crafts and most of them are bringing in desired results, according to Ahmed al Farsi, Oman representative at the WCC (World Craft Council)- Asia Pacific region.
"Marketing is a key challenge for crafts industry today and we are initiating various measures to encourage foreign markets to consider these products. Side by side, we are exploring newer markets in Europe and strategic plans are in place to achieve the same" Al Farsi told the Observer on the sidelines of the third board meeting of the WCC for Asia Pacific region under the auspices of Shaikh Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman, Majlis Ash'shura.
A host of issues, besides marketing, membership, bylaws, and the preparations for its golden jubilee celebrations to be held in China this year were in discussions.
He further said that the PACI were able to save several crafts which were finding it difficult to exist and several measures were taken to educate Omani youth the alienating crafts.
"We have so far saved 14 crafts which include the main crafts such as silverware, wood crafts, wood works, and leather works. We achieved the same by imparting training and development programmes for the new generation and by giving them more encouragement to begin new ventures in tis area".
Additionally, the PACI has conducted training courses in making jewellery and other metal wares, and frankincense products besides conducting craft fares around the world.
"We are also providing support to people who are into the trade such as exporting the Omani crafts to the world market. We are focusing on the marketing aspect of the Omani craft in a broader global arena", Ahmed al Farsi added.
