TEHRAN -- "Corruption of the most Arab rulers was behind their passiveness on Gaza crisis," Australian expert Mohammed A. Hegazi told the Mehr News Agency. Following is the text of interview with Mohammed A. Hegazi about the Gaza war.

Q: What were the roots and reasons behind Israel's 22-day lethal war on the Gaza Strip?
A:
The main reason for the attack on Gaza, and the war crimes committed, was to scare the Palestinian people of Gaza and to force them to flee their homes, like they did in 1948 when they were massacred by Zionist gangs. Another reason was to turn the people of Gaza against Hamas, being the party presumably responsible for antagonizing the Zionist military by firing rockets at their nearby settlements.

Q: What will be the outcome of the Gaza war?
A:
The stand of world governments will not change. Enemies of Israel will remain enemies. Friendly governments will remain friendly. The significant change has been to the attitude of ordinary people worldwide. The unimpeded flow of information via the Internet and satellite TV made it impossible to cover up large-scale atrocities of the magnitude of Gaza war crimes. Many world cities have seen demonstrations in huge numbers supporting the Palestinians and condemning Israel.

Q: Middle East quartet envoy Tony Blair has said that the Arab peace initiative is "not dead" despite Israel's ruthless attack on Gaza. What do you think?
A:
Tony Blair is the last person to meddle in Middle Eastern affairs. He is one of the main fabricators of the reasons for attacking Iraq. Arab governments have lost the initiative to do anything worthwhile. Most Arab rulers are too corrupt to care about the suffering of their own people, let alone that of the Palestinian people. Arab rulers are concerned mainly about their own survival against the will of their people. Any "initiative" by any Arab ruler would be according to directives from Washington, tailored to suit the situation at a given time, and would soon die out. The meeting at Sharm el-Sheikh, which Hosni Mubarak arranged at the behest of his masters in Washington and Tel Aviv, included the Zionist heads of state of France and Italy. They were concerned mainly about finding a face-saving solution for Israel, in a manner that would look like an initiative by the ageing Egyptian president, to which Israel generously responded.

Q: What were Israel's achievements in war on Gaza?
A:
Israel achieved nothing. Zionists have further tarnished their dirty image in the eyes of the world. Hamas came out stronger than before. Further hatred has been instilled into the new generation of Gazans who would soon become new Hamas fighters. Improved missiles will still reach Hamas from outside Gaza. A balance of terror would soon be achieved when Hamas take possession of long-range rockets capable of hitting Israel's nuclear facilities.

Q: How do you assess U.S. approach to the conflict?
A:
The U.S. will always support Israel. Zionists dominate U.S. government and institutions. Key positions are given to Americans who are also Israeli citizens. Nothing is likely to change in the foreseeable future, unless the U.S. itself collapses as a result of its shabby economic practices.
