Global networking company Cisco and IT solutions provider Gulf Business Machines (GBM) have teamed up to provide the first official Cisco learning centre in Oman to build the information and communication technology (ICT) skills of the sultanate's job seekers.

Set up in order to develop the computer skills of Omani youth and provide them with Cisco qualifications, the centre will also help users achieve specific skills and certificates as the industry diversifies, according to Olivier Mouries, general manager of GBM Oman.

Mouries added that more and more contracts from companies are stipulating that they want people with specific qualifications - otherwise the contracts are not awarded.

"Customers today are embarking on quite complex projects which are critical in terms of technology, applications they have to deliver and communication and many customers do not want to take the risk by hiring people that might not have the right skills."

Iyad al Chammat, general manager of Cisco in Yemen, Oman and Afghanistan, added that the centre aims at unlocking the potential of the sultanate's job-seeking youth and create a new generation of home-grown ICT professionals.

The centre will offer a broad range of Cisco training systems to job seekers and IT professionals in the sultanate, with sessions led by certified Cisco instructors.
