DOHA: There is a need to encourage more tyre safety awareness among motorists in Qatar to prevent the prevalence of traffic accidents, according to a senior executive of leading global tyre maker.

Jaishankar, Business Manager-Automotive of Aamal Trading and Distribution which is the local distributor of Bridgestone Tyres, said the level of awareness among motorists for tyre safety is still around 50 percent although he admitted the situation is much better than five years ago.

Speaking with The Peninsula on the sidelines of the Bridgestone 'Tyre Safety and Eco Station' campaign yesterday at the City Centre, Jaishankar said it is important to educate motorists to always check the proper inflation pressure of the tyres before hitting the road if only to maintain traffic safety.

Sharing his views during the event, Kentaro Hara, General Manager, Consumer Tyre Marketing of Bridgestone Middle East & Africa, said the GCC awareness campaign is part of their company corporate social responsibility to educate motorists about proper conditioning to maintain the great quality of their tyres.

"Maintenance is very important to ensure durability of the tyres," said the Japanese tyre expert as he advised motorists to have a regular check up of their tyres once every two months. The Bridgestone 'Tyre Safety and Eco Station' campaign started its second GCC-wide roadshow this week in Doha. From yesterday until Saturday, the fun and educational family campaign, which is aimed at making the region's roads safer for everyone, was held at the ground floor, main activity area, at the City Center Doha.

At the event, Bridgestone staff at a special demonstration corner of the stand taught visitors effortless steps to enhance safety while driving on roads and drivers taught how to check the proper tyre air pressure and tread wear to avoid the dangers of driving with underinflated/overinflated and worn-out/damaged tyres.

Children accompanying their parents also participated and enjoyed the drawing and entertainment activities at the Kids Area of the booth
