Dubai, Sep 01st, 2011 (WAM) -- An Emirati citizen's generous help during Ramadan could bring back the sunshine into the lives of a number of prisoners in Dubai.

The citizen, who didn't like to be known except by the name of 'a well-wisher', donated AED 1million to the Dubai prison authorities during the Holy month to use it for settling the liabilities of a number of prisoners who were serving terms in financial cases.

Unable to find the means of settling their debts, the prisoners from various nationalities were facing uncertain future, and then came the help of God in the form of individual charities from the community members. The citizen's donation was one among them and there were several other persons who made donations to the General Directorate of Reformative and Punitive Institutions in Dubai.

The officials at the directorate hailed the great humanitarian efforts of the Emirati community during the month of Ramadan. Their benevolence could help to release a number of prisoners, many of whom are the single breadwinners of their families.

The donations will be used to repay their debts, as a result of which they could be released from prisons and allowed to reunite with their families. The donations will also be used to buy air tickets for a number of prisoners, who were waiting for a benefactor to turn up to help them to return to their respective countries after their prison terms had expired, said Director General of the Reformative and Punitive Institutions Major General Mohammed Humaid Al Suwaidi.

Many prisoners were sent to jail after the courts had passed verdicts on them in cases of unpaid financial liabilities, which had accrued on them for reasons beyond their control, explained Maj.General Al Suwaidi.

The General Directorate has set up a committee to render humanitarian services to the prisoners. The officials encouraged the general public to communicate with the committee on the phone number 04-2138888.
