AMMAN (Petra) - Some 400 accountants, auditors and representatives of various Arab professional associations convened on Saturday to look into main challenges facing the accounting profession in the Arab world.

During the 8th International Scientific Accounting Conference, titled "Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Between Accounting, Auditing and Economic Role", which commenced yesterday, participants reviewed the importance of such enterprises and their contribution to the economy.

Mustafa Barari, president of the Audit Bureau, who inaugurated the conference, pointed out that small- and medium-sized enterprises play a key role in the economic life, bring up the national income added-value and increases job opportunities.

The conference, organised by the Jordanian Society of Chartered Accountants in cooperation with the General Federation of Arab Auditors and Accountants, provides a platform for accountants and auditors to look into developments in the profession, especially in light of the latest economic developments at the international level.

The conference is also viewed as important in light of the international trade agreements, technological developments and the recent international financial crisis.

Naim Khouri, board chairman of the Jordanian Society of Chartered Accountants, said sound accounting is the main basis for making the right administrative and economic decisions.

As he emphasised Jordan's compliance with the criteria of international accountancy, he also called for amending the temporary law on regulating the accountancy profession for 2003 to address existing loopholes.

Prime Minister Nader Dahabi yesterday met with the Jordanian Society of Chartered Accountants chairman and heads of the various Arab accounting organisations taking part in the conference.

During the meeting, accountancy officials briefed the premier on the conference, its goals and concerns.

General Federation of Arab Auditors and Accountants Chairman Abdel Karim Al Zarooni, highlighted the conditions of legal accountants in the Arab world and the federation's role in regulating the profession.
