DOHA - World renowned hypermarket chain Carrefour has embarked on a new mission: it aims to help reduce the use of plastic bags by the end of 2008. After successfully introducing the concept in the UAE and Egypt, Carrefour, operated by Majid Al Futtaim Group, is offering its customers in Qatar reusable shopping bags at a price of QR1.
Reusable bags are more environment-friendly than non-biodegradable plastic bags and customers can buy the bags at all check out counters at hypermarkets. Carrefour, which first introduced its plan to reduce the use of plastic bags in 2007, has since sold over 800,000 reusable bags in the UAE alone. It aims to reduce the numbers of plastic bags being used by the end of the year. Christian De Nale, District Manager, Carrefour Qatar, yesterday said: "Our aim is to generate awareness among our shoppers about the harm non-biodegradable plastic bags can cause to the environment. By offering reusable bags, we have taken just one of the many steps to help preserve the environment."
