King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences will organize a three-day workshop from tomorrow on competencies required by physicians in the 21st century based on CanMEDS.

Three medical education experts from KSAU-HS College of Medicine: Dr. Esam Albanyan, Dr. Khalid Al-Harbi and Dr. Noura Bin Saleem will conduct the workshop.

It covers the array of competencies to deal with the increasing complexities of health care delivery, rapid advances in medical knowledge, and changing societal and patient expectations.

Albanyan asserts that tomorrow's doctors must be effective communicators, advocates, scholars, professionals, collaborators and managers. He added, "It is now clear that these competencies can, and indeed must be taught and evaluated in the same way that the medical expert role has been assessed."

The aim of this workshop, according to Albanyan, is to present CanMEDS competencies while promoting awareness of its significance and importance in resident education. This workshop is one of the fruitful results of an ongoing collaboration between KSAU-HS and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) to establish a Center in Saudi Arabia for CanMEDS standards. KSAU-HS has taken several initiatives to incorporate CanMEDS into its postgraduate training and organized a series of conferences and workshops on CanMEDS.

The workshop is targeting those involved in health care profession education, which include postgraduate program administrators, directors, coordinators, clinician educators, and curriculum designers.
