MUSCAT -- A new book titled Food and Brain Health consisting of 27 chapters and edited by Dr Mohamed Essa, Dr Mushtaq A Memon and Dr Mohammed Akbar, has been brought out by Nova publishers New York. The neuroprotective effects of food (fruits, vegetables and nuts) on brain related diseases are discussed in this book. The book has comprehensive collection of research studies/review articles that will benefit students at various levels, researchers in several disciplines (such as alternative medicines, nutrition, neurosciences, agriculture, food science and medicine) and many others interested in the discipline. The authors have accumulated many years of experience in their respective scientific fields including natural compounds and their potential beneficial effects on human health.

This book provides a compelling perspective on the potential benefits of many natural compounds, herbs sea food fruits and nuts for which substantial evidence now exist in the literature. Individual chapters that are covered and written by experienced authors provide an additional value to the readers. The chapters organised under three sections, (1) fruits herbs and brain health; (2) nuts sea food and brain health; and (3) vegetables and brain health; provide the readers to follow the basic understanding of chemical constituents including their potential benefits and side effects within the purview of health perspective. The articles are written by experienced researchers from various countries including USA, Australia, Japan, India, China and Oman.

Dr Mohamed Essa is an Assistant Professor in Food Science and Nutrition Department at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. Dr  Mushtaq A Memon is a clinician scientist who specialises in veterinary reproduction, and an internationally recognised scholar and a founding faculty member of the Allen School for Global Animal Health at Washington State University. Dr  Mohammed Akbar is a scientist at the National Institute of Health USA; his research interest is in natural compounds and their beneficial effects on human health. This work was fully supported by a research project funded to Dr Essa by The Research Council, Oman (TRC) studying the effect of dietary supplementation of fruits grown in Oman on Alzheimer's Dementia (AD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
