For the first time in the UAE, Bollywood diva Rekha will make an appearance on stage at I am Asha, a concert to celebrate Asha Bhosle’s 70th anniversary in Indian cinema.
In the last part of the show, the actress will join Farooq Shaikh to chat with the Grand Ol’ Dame of Indian film music, who has voiced Rekha for several chartbusting songs, such as those from Umrao Jaan (Justujoo jiski thi, In aankhon ki masti ke) and Ijaazat (Katra katra milti hai, Chhoti si kahani hai).
Rekha has acted in over 180 films since her 1966 debut in Telugu film Rangula Ratnam, often playing strong female characters. Though she has several commercial hits under her belt, including many with alleged lover Amitabh Bachchan (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Khoon Pasina, Mr Natwarlal, Do Anjaane, Suhaag, Alaap, etc), she’s best known for her performances in Bachchan-starrer Silsila, Aastha (where she portrays a housewife who gives in to her desires), Ijaazat (the sacrificing wife), Ghar (the young traumatised rape victim who finds it hard to return to a happy married life).
She won the National Award for her portrayal of the courtesan Umrao Jaan in the 1981 Muzaffar Ali film (also starring Shaikh) and several best actress awards for Rakesh Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang. She was last seen in this year’s blockbuster Krrish 3.
Rekha was honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award by the Government of India, in 2010.
I Am Asha will be held at Shaikh Rashid Hall in Dubai World Trade Centre on December 13. Tickets are priced from Dh100 to Dh2,000. Call 050-2254010 or 04-4337606.
