BAHRAIN Telecommunications Company (Batelco) chief executive Tony Hart received a delegation from the Bahrain Internet Society (BIS), the organisers of the Future Information Technology 2003 Conference and Exhibition to be held next month.

Batelco played host to the organising committee of the Kingdom’s first annual Future IT conference to discuss areas of mutual interest.
The first annual Future IT 2003 Conference and Exhibition will take place on May 17-19 at Gulf International Convention and Exhibition Centre under the patronage of the Minister of Commerce Ali Saleh Al Saleh.

The keynote speech will be delivered by international futurist and thinker Dr Simon Moores speaking on the evolution of e-government initiatives of many Middle Eastern and Gulf governments.

As part of its plan to build "the intelligent kingdom" in Bahrain, Batelco has forged closer links with BIS which promotes the wider use of Internet in the Bahraini society by advocating business growth through the increased use of Internet applications and e-commerce.

As part of developing closer relationships with the society and backing the development of the IT sector in the Kingdom, the company decided to become the top sponsor of its upcoming Future IT conference.

"We are delighted to be a sponsor of this event as the Internet is a crucial part of our business. We are very keen to support Bahrain’s societies and organisations in their voyages into cyberspace and see this as a crucial part of building Bahrain as the central communications hub of the Gulf region," Hart said.

During the meeting, headed by the BIS Chairman and the Director of the Ministry of Health’s Information Directorate, Ahmed Al Hujairy, Hart shared views with BIS members in the delegation and took keen interest in the society’s contributions and the latest developments taking place in the society, as well as its plans for the IT conference.

Al Hujairy thanked Hart for Batelco’s participation and support. "We are thrilled that the company has decided to sponsor the exhibition which is the first of its kind to be held in Bahrain.

"We are particularly pleased to welcome Batelco as a friend of BIS. They have been generous, not just in its sponsorship but also in showing us real practical support to help us develop the future of Internet use in Bahrain," he said.

"The company was extremely generous in offering support to us, and we are most appreciative of their recent decision to grant the society free Internet access for the Internet club for the whole of 2003.

"In addition, we were delighted to receive the generous gift of eight second-hand computers for our computer-recycling programme," he said.

The meeting at Batelco’s Hamala facility was attended by BIS board members and management including the Director for Research and Development, Abdullah Al Hamed; the Director for Societies and Academic Affairs, Ghazwa Sulaibeekh; the Director for Conferences, Seminars and Training, Hisham Al Alawi; the Director for Online Services Programme, Ahmed Swafiri, and the former board member and CEO of Creative Knowledge, Waleed Kanoo.
