Basra - Basra provincial council has elected Sabah Mohammed al-Bazzouni as its new chairman following the resignation of Jabbar Ameen who reportedly stepped down because of political disputes.
Ameen submitted his resignation earlier this month "due to health complications". Sources within the council who requested anonymity said he was marginalized after he walked away from the Dawa Party - led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki - which holds the majority of seats in the council.
Al-Bazzouni called his first meeting as chairman of the council during which, council members pledged their commitment to the people of Basra.
