Abu Dhabi: Baniyas Investment and Development Company (BID) said on Sunday that it has launched a Dh2.2 billion, multi-use real estate project in Abu Dhabi's Baniyas city with the aim of playing a pivotal role in the real estate development of the emirate.

The project will include villas in addition to commercial and residential towers.

The design and major plans have been under development since early 2007, and once complete in 2009, the Baniyas development will have the capacity to house approximately 3,000 people.

"This multi-use development will elevate Bani-yas's leisure, commercial and tourism appeal. The 108-hectare project will provide the community with modern residential, commercial and entertainment facilities in addition to a brand new headquarters and sports facilities for our club," said a BID executive.

"This project is about to enter the initial construction phase, and represents the first of several pioneering plans which will be announced by BID in due time," he said.

There would also be a shopping mall and a car parking that can accommodate as many as 2,280 cars.

"The shopping centre is the first of its kind for the city of Baniyas, and will represent a focal point for shoppers. A fully-equipped medical centre staffed by international professionals will offer the city expert general medical services," said BID.

In addition, BID will construct a modern school managed by a leading Swiss organisation and a ballroom that can be used for special occasions by residents of Baniyas free of charge as well as by residents of neighbouring areas.

There would be a Baniyas Sports Club that will house the main stadium with a seating capacity of 20,000, in addition to establishing seven training fields and a number of indoor multi-purpose courts.
