MANAMA: Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), the Bahrain-based aluminium smelter, said it has been awarded with the ‘Bronze Medal’ 2020 in recognition of its commitment and performance in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by the international rating platform EcoVadis.

Based on international CSR standards including the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact and the ISO 26000, covering 190 spend categories and 150 countries, the EcoVadis certification takes into consideration four areas: environment, labour practices, fair business and sustainable procurement, it stated.

On the top recognition, acting chief executive Ali Al Baqali said: “This certification is a reflection of our commitment to CSR and sustainability initiatives.”

“This is just the first step as we aim to undergo more upgrades into our safety, environment and social governance which will eventually position us as a green aluminium producer,” he observed.

“This honour comes at the right time as we fully ramp up Line 6 and seek to expand our product portfolio to newer markets especially in Europe and North America,” he added.

Alba also achieved the ASI Performance Certification.
