The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry has moved a step closer to implementing an e-commerce project with the awarding of a tender for the project to a specialist company.

The chamber said yesterday that the project would  provide "an array of electronic services" to its members as well as the commercial sector.

It also aims to provide a platform of data and information related to all commercial and economic activities that will be of interest to investors and businessmen in the Kingdom and abroad.

"The new step is a translation of the efforts exerted by the chamber to be in step with the latest developments in IT and e-commerce," chairman Khalid Kanoo said.

"The chamber is keen to ensure that the private sector in the Kingdom keeps abreast with the latest developments at the local, regional and international levels," he said.

Kanoo said that the programme was part of a measure initiated by the Prime Minister, Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, to establish an higher IT and communications committee.

The chamber has set up a  special IT and e-commerce committee, headed by Dr Tawfeeq Almoayed, to organise all efforts to implement the e-commerce project.

Dr Almoayed said that the project was in the final stage. "The system links commercial transactions in the market with good programmes which benefit traders and the chamber members by updating daily transactions such as information, licences with the members," Dr Almoayed said.

He said that the e-commerce project would be available on the chamber's Web site which will provide a database of information about trade exhibitions, international markets, conferences and meetings as well as extensive statistics and information about Bahrain's foreign trade, including imports and exports in terms of quantity, value and countries of origin. The system will be linked to some of the best Web sites of of the chambers of commerce and industries in the other GCC countries and regions.

Dr Almoayed said that there would be three types of services offered in the e-commerce project. The first type, which is free of charge services, is available to all members and surfers of the Web site. This will include basic services and facilities with members' database, a chamber e-market, browsing for government tenders, and information on events organised by the chamber apart from other news and Press releases from the chamber.

The second type is represented by the services through annual subscription of the chamber members only. This service provides the ability to surf through and view all services and facilities provided by the chamber to its members and direct purchase through credit cards, search through commercial database, buying and selling through public auctions and announcements about business opportunities and offers.

The third type is in the form of services through the annual "silver subscription" and provides, among all other services in previous types, viewing e-catalogues, receiving documents, taking part in public and private auctions, participation in public and private tenders and bids, logistic follow-up and the setting up of a Web site for member companies and merchandising their products electronically.

Kanoo said that the step was within the framework of the chamber's efforts to spur modernisation and keep up with new requirements in terms of the use of electronic systems and provision of online.
