The Institution of Engineers Pakistan Bahrain Chapter (IEP-BC) in cooperation with the Bahrain Society of Engineers is organizing a seminar on "Climate Change and Environmental Protection in the Kingdom of Bahrain" on Tuesday. The event will be held at Bahrain Society of Engineers Auditorium in Juffair.
The aspects related to climate change and its economic impact will also be discussed during the seminar. There will be three brief presentations during the seminar and will include Remarks on Climate Change by Sayed Aqa, UN Resident Coordinator/ UN Resident Representative, Bahrain, "Climate Change and Environmental Protection" by Rehan Ahmed, Senior Environmental Specialist, Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife and "Bahrain and Climate Change Convention" by Zahwa Al Kuwari, Director, Environmental Assessment & Planning, Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife & National Focal Point of UNFCCC.
Rehan Ahmed said that climate change is one of the most critical global environmental challenges of the present time. Recent events have emphatically demonstrated our growing vulnerability to climate change. The impacts of rising global temperatures are bringing changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events witnessed worldwide like speedy melting of ice caps and glaciers, changes in rainfall patterns and intensification of tropical cyclones. He mentioned that human activities are the primary driver of this catastrophic phenomenon contributing to climate change including in particular the burning of fossil fuels, affecting agriculture and land-use changes like deforestation, endangering food security, sea-level rise, accelerated erosion and inundation of coastal zones and communities leading to enhanced intensity of natural disasters, biological species extinction and the spread of vector-borne diseases.
Rehan highlighted that the seminar will address the causes of climate change and will highlight the responsibilities as concerned and responsible citizens of Bahrain to take appropriate actions for avoiding any hazards due to climate change and to protect our environmental resources in the Kingdom.
