The BD20,000 traditional monument project in East Riffa is progressing on schedule, writes Naila Barakat. The monument along the Shaikh Sabah Avenue is part of a beautification scheme for the area, the director general of the Southern Area Municipality, Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, said yesterday.

The monument represents musical instruments to reflect Bahraini traditional art. "It comprises steel material to look like old wood and is adjacent to the pavement beautified with pottery vases, flowers and large pieces of stone in the Shaikh Sabah Avenue," he said. "The monument is being erected with a lighting system on a site which has been cleared of service cables. The main attraction will be the national flag in the centre of the monument." The monument has been designed by Lula Al Khaja.

Engineer Aasim Abdullatif Abdullah said: "We are identifying a number of venues for such monuments. "Under a one-year programme, we plan landscaping and beautification of southern areas including Hanainiya, Al Areen, Ajeera and Riffa. Engineers are working on different ideas and themed-projects to make the southern area unique."
