The design for the $40 million Krafts Foods manufacturing factory in Bahrain is in its final stages - designating the Kingdom as the headquarters for Krafts Foods in the Middle East region, said Andrew Trevis, Plant Manager-Krafts Foods, Bahrain.

The plan for the design of the state-of-the art factory building that will be set up at the Bahrain International Investment Park (BIIP) in Hidd, is in its final stages that has specifications of its global manufacturing plants, he told the Tribune yesterday.

"The ground-breaking ceremony for the processed cheese and beverages factory of Krafts will not be taking place before Christmas. The factory in Bahrain will produce 50,000 tonnes of cheese and TANG powdered beverages. At first the factory will be producing these two important categories, which has more demand in this area of the world and then will focus other businesses that Krafts is selling in the Middle East.

"The construction work for the manufacturing plant will be held in three phases once it is finalised. The phase one will be the laying of the foundation, steel base and building; second phase will be the equipment installation and the third will be commissioning of the plant," said Trevis.

The Kraft Foods factory will be one of the largest foreign food and beverage plants in the GCC region at the BIIP in Hidd. Currently Bahrain is importing five per cent of Krafts Foods products, but after the opening of the factory most of the products will be exported to Middle East and Africa and the GCC countries.

Kraft Foods has been the leading cheese and powdered beverages company in the GCC for 40 years. It currently imports its finished cheese from Australia and powdered beverage products from the USA. On completion of the new project at the BIIP, Kraft will supply the GCC market for these products from Bahrain.

The Middle East is an important market for Kraft Foods, which has been distributing products in the region for more than 50 years.

Trevis said: "Kraft Foods Bahrain WLL will create 250 job opportunities at the BIIP plant. The workforce of 250 people will be employed in various department of the factory from administration, information technology, and financial services to processing work of the factory."

At the launch of the Krafts in Bahrain Tamer Shabana, Manager Corporate Affairs GCC, Krafts Foods said that it has a small production plant for Oreo cookies and Ritz biscuits in Dammam and was bringing its supply of other Krafts Foods in the Middle East through Dubai. With this production plant for cheese and beverages 100 per cent of supplies will be exported from Bahrain.

Krafts Foods is now the largest branded food and beverage company in North America and the second largest in the world. It had net revenues in 2005 of $34 billion, with 175 manufacturing and processing facilities worldwide.

Kraft Foods is world's leading cheese manufacturer and the second-largest food and beverage (F&B) company, with net revenues of more than $34 billion in 2005. Hundreds of millions of times a day, in more than 155 countries, consumers reach for their favourite Kraft brands including Kraft cheeses and dinners and Maxwell House coffees, Oscar Mayer meats, Oreo cookies, Ritz, Philadelphia cream cheese, Milka and Cte d'Or chocolates, and Tang refreshment beverages.
