The Ministry of Works and Housing yesterday announced the completion of the first phase of all the civil works of the Fishing Harbours Project.

The project had been undertaken after the directives of His Majesty the King, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the Prime Minister, Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, to improve conditions of the Kingdom's fishermen.

The Head of Public Relations and Community Service at the ministry,  Adnan Alshaikh, said that all building and external works of upgrading and expanding three existing fishing harbours at Budaiya, Muharraq and Sitra have also been completed except for the main power connection by the Ministry of Electricity and Water.

"The construction work at each site had been split into two sections," he said. "The marine and civil works contract was carried out by Ahmed Mansour Al Aali and this included dredging, concrete quay walls, stone protection and small boat jetties."

He said the second part - consisting of buildings and external works - was carried out by Habib Ali Awachi.

"This comprised new lockers, workshops, offices for the Coast Guard and the fisheries personnel, shops, ablution blocks, restaurants and cafeterias, a community hall, guard houses, waste oil and garbage disposal facilities, roads, parking and utilities."

He said other minor related contracts for the provision of breakwaters had been awarded to National Excavating Est and that for channel markers was awarded to the Bahrain Workshop Company.

"The work began in December 2003 with an overall project value in the region of BD7.85 million," he said.

He said this major development is expected to not only give a tremendous boost to marine life and resources in Bahrain but also serve to become major picnic spots, complete with restaurants, fast food joints, shopping arenas and modern facilities for fishermen."

He said that, for the first time, covered lockers were being readied for fishermen. "The three sites will also have places fitted with work-stations where the fishermen can carry out repairs to their craft," he said.

A total of 12 locations had initially been identified for upgrading but for the time being, efforts are being concentrated on three most important ones.

The project was supervised by the special projects department at the ministry and the Directorate of Fisheries and Natural Resources.
