Bahrain's Ministry of Transportation (MoT) has extended the submission date for the main construction works prequalification for the $980 million Bahrain Airport Modernization Program.

"We have extended the submission date as we received numerous requests from contractors for more time to submit the applications due to Eid holidays," said an official at Bahrain Airport Company (BAC).

The date has been extended from 15 October to 29 October, 2014.

The prequal work, for the new passenger terminal building (nearly 170,000 square meters) at Bahrain International Airport, comprises all civil engineering works, MEP, aircraft parking, car parks interior, exterior and other related works.

Additionally, the contractor will also be responsible for managing the nominated subcontractor for baggage handling system, passenger loading bridges and information communication technology.

UAE companies or UAE joint venture partners will be given preference as Abu Dhabi Fund for Development is funding the project.

BAC is executing the program on behalf of MoT.

Hill International (listed in New York stock exchange) is the project management consultant and Aéroport de Paris Ingérierie (ADPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Aéroports de Paris (listed in En Paris exchange), is the design and engineering consultants.

The airport will handle13.5 million passengers per year when completed.
