THE chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry committee on the old souq and traders committee, Jawad Yousif Al Hawaj, yesterday said that the committee was taking all possible steps to seek guidance from traders and businessmen before the start of construction work in the old souq area.
 
Addressing a Press conference at the BCCI, he said that the BCCI committee would involve all business segments in the decision-making to avoid future problems.
 
Al Hawaj said that all government departments concerned, BCCI members, jewellers, traders and businessmen would attend a meeting today "The Minister of Commerce, Ali Saleh Al Saleh, will address the meeting and answer the queries," he said.
 
"We will discuss all outstanding issues with traders in order to finalise a comprehensive action plan," Al Hawaj said, adding that the BCCI’s 12-member committee has been working very closely with another panel headed by the Minister of Commerce. "This committee was formed in line with Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s directives to facilitate efforts in this regard."
 
"The committee, headed by the minister, is coordinating with different ministries and the Government and also providing assistance on matters related to Government departments," he said.
 
"Development work will be completed in different phases, and, initially, it will include the area from Bab Al Bahrain to Shaikh Abdullah Road, covering around a 333-metre-long strip," he said.
 
The Chairman of the Pearls Gold and Jewellery Committee, Dr Ahmed Jassim Tahoo, said that jewellers would participate in the meeting scheduled for today finalise the recommendations.
 
Dr Tahoo said that the Government has set aside BD4.5 million to be spent on the development work in first phase.
