Of the four young men arrested in Dubai, one of them has allegedly admitted to possessing drugs.
They had gone to Dubai together from Mumbai and were in a hotel on October 20 "when the police raided and found one of the boys with drugs," Farhan's father and Indian politician Abu Azim Azmi told Gulf News.
"My son was weeping when he called me this evening and told me and his mother not to worry since he had done nothing wrong. He said that Prasad, one of his friends, had admitted to carrying the drugs. He also told us there was no need for a lawyer as he would come out of detention within three or four days," said Azmi.
Apparently, one of them was believed to be carrying a quantity of drugs. It is possible his rivals could have tipped off the police to carry out raid, said Azmi.
The parliamentarian, who confessed to being acutely upset and embarrassed by this scandal, also said that his 22-year-old son never smoked nor drank. "We are from a very religious family."
The dropout from Jaihind College in Mumbai who was now studying privately had made a trip to Dubai to recruit a chef for his Italian restaurant, Basilico, in Colaba in South Mumbai.
"Since Dubai is so close and we have several relatives there, I allowed him to go with his friends," said Azmi, who added that his son's call lasted just a couple of minutes.
Meanwhile, car designer Dilip Chhabria is in Dubai to get his son released. He has said that his son did not possess drugs and therefore there was no case against him.
A press release from G.P. Sippy stated that Shaan was the director of Gippy Films Ltd who was taken in for questioning. The release also said there were no charges against him and he would be released shortly after routine questioning and paperwork.
