Astara, in northern Gilan province, is to be transformed into the major grain trade hub after a multi-purpose port is launched, said the managing director of Government Trading Corporation of Iran.
Hamid Alikhani said Iran is located in the heart of the grain trade region spanning from Central Asia in the north to the Persian Gulf in the south, INN.ir wrote.
Major Grain producers Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine are in the north. And, the Mideast nations which are major grain consuming markets lie to the south of the Islamic state, he noted.
Iran is economically viable for grain trade and transit from the Middle East and West Asia to East Europe.
He elaborated that the three abovementioned countries "annually export 40 million tons of grain, and Persian Gulf states buy 18 million tons of grain" a year.
Grain trade is a profitable business, he said, adding Iran is planning to draw on the potential and transit two million tons of grain from northern Iran to the Persian Gulf Arab states.
