Qatar's Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has invited contractors to prequalify for the Qatar Pedestrian Bridge Design & Build Programme.

Under the program, about 20 to 30 pedestrian bridges will be built across the country.

Additional bridges may also be planned and developed every year on a demand basis.

The bridge designs are categorized into basic, intermediate and superior depending on the site.

Type 1 or the basic design will be covered, accessible by stairs and located in rural and semi-urban locations. They will have a basic modular design with a standard cross-section and architectural finishes could include bolt-on skins designed to reflect the site surroundings.

Type 2a bridges will be covered, accessible by stairs and have additional architectural finishes to reflect the site surroundings.

Type 2b bridges will be covered, accessed by stairs and elevators and the architectural finishes will reflect the site surroundings.

Type 3 bridges will have a unique design and accommodate present and future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), in addition to the above requirements.

The pre-qualification documents can be accessed from the website free of charge and must be submitted by 28 May, 2014.

The contract is expected to be completed by three years (1095 days).

The pedestrian bridges form an integral part the Qatar National Traffic Safety Strategy launched last year.
