The Fifth UAE Conference of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai.

The conference, from January 22 to today, is being held under the auspices of Shiekh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry and President of the Department of Health and Medical Services.

The conference is sponsored by the Society of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine(SACP), which is a chapter of the Emirates Medical Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Department of Health and Medical Services, Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences and Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking on behalf of Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Madfa, UAE Minister of Health, Hassan Al Alkeim, Under Secretary of the Ministry, said: "Considering all the countries where participating doctors have come from, this conference will be beneficial to all of us.

"The conference will add to and update our knowledge of anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine, as it is closely linked to treating intensive care patients."

Speakers at the conference are from the UAE, the U.S. and UK, France, Germany, Holland, Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

Professor Dr Joseph Costandi, Head of Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, Director of Pain Therapy at Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah and President of SACP, said this is the first conference organised by SACP since its establishment in 2000.

"Such conferences will update our knowledge regarding our specialties. I assure you that the scientific programmes will offer something for everyone and help us to share the many issues facing our practice in the third millennium," he said.

"About 30 per cent of the speakers are from the UAE," he said.

The conference includes lectures, workshops, and symposia. There is also a trade exhibition, complementing scientific activities.

The total number of sessions are 19, and a further session dedicated to re-electing members of the SACP and its new board of directors, which will be announced at the closing session today.
