American teens have become obsessed with the shape of their legs — just the latest fad when it comes to peer pressure, adolescent angst and the body beautiful. Sadly, though, as a result of this unhealthy obsession, teens are developing serious medical conditions, both physical and mental.
If the fad was confined to just one socioeconomic segment or geographic location, one might be inclined to put it down to a single factor. Sadly, that is not the case. Whether it is from the big screen, on television, advertisements in stores, from influences in Hollywood, the runway, from singers or those who hold sway over young — and immature — minds, teens are obsessed with how their body looks. And sadly too, we are not immune to the fads of impressionable young minds, with girls dieting, over-exercising or resorting to slimming pills to reduce their body mass. As a society, there is no quick-fix, no change in government policy, no magic elixir to end this waste of time on a perfect waist. The only thing we can do is embrace our children and tell them they are loved. Just the way they are.
