AMMAN - Amman's Central Traffic Management System Project has won an international award for its approach to maintaining traffic flow and reducing emissions, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) said on Monday.

During the recent Gulf Traffic 2009 Conference in Dubai, the Traffic Tech Group received the Innovation Transport - Traffic Management Award for the design and implementation of the project, which has benefited the capital, according to Khalid Haddadin of the GAM Traffic Department.

The project entails the connection of 96 intersections to a Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System, which automatically monitors traffic at intersections and adjusts cycle times to suit current conditions within Amman, according to Traffic Tech Group.

The system also provides an adaptive green wave at successive intersections to reduce the number of stops, in addition to 1,200 inductive loop detectors and 40 dome cameras at critical intersections for real-time traffic surveillance, the group said.

As the capital lacked a sufficient fiber optic network, the group developed a means to place real-time traffic signal controls and CCTV cameras on single 512 kilobyte digital lines, the group added.

In addition, a control room was equipped to manage all operations centrally, with plans to turn the building to a full-fledged transportation control centre in the future.

In October, Traffic Tech Group received the "Best Urban Project" award from GAM for its Amman Traffic Control Centre Project.
