The Labour Code currently being drafted in Algeria includes provisions "hardening" sanctions on child labour, Labour Ministry Secretary-General Mohamed Khiat said on Saturday (June 12th). Speaking at an Algiers ceremony held to mark World Day against Child Labour, Khiat said that the problem is "virtually nonexistent" in Algeria. Inspectors found that among children under age 16, 0.17% worked as salaried employees in the economic sector in 2008, compared to .54% in 2006, he noted.

In related news, Algerian Labour Minister Tayeb Louh credited the country's compulsory education for children under age 16 with the positive child labour situation. Louh was speaking Sunday at the 99th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, APS reported.
